Amazon has officially rolled out Alexa+, its next-generation AI assistant, nationwide across the United States, introducing new pricing options and a free trial tier to expand accessibility for non-Prime members.
Pricing and Availability
The premium Alexa+ service is available for $20 per month to all U.S. users, or free for Amazon Prime members. To make the service more accessible, Amazon has also introduced a limited free tier for non-Prime members, though it’s restricted to text-based interactions and includes usage limits. This free offering allows users to test the assistant’s capabilities through Alexa.com before committing to a paid subscription.
Prime members can upgrade by saying “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+” or by visiting Alexa.com and signing into their Amazon account. With Prime membership costing $15 per month, the included Alexa+ access makes the subscription an attractive value proposition for those already considering Prime benefits.
Enhanced Capabilities
Alexa+ represents a significant upgrade from the classic Alexa experience, featuring more natural and complex conversational abilities. The new assistant includes agentic capabilities that enable it to handle sophisticated tasks independently, including:
- Managing your calendar and schedule
- Providing personalized recommendations
- Making restaurant and service reservations
- Controlling smart home devices with greater intelligence
The system leverages new AZ3 and AZ3 Pro chips to power what Amazon calls “ambient AI”—technology designed to understand user needs and provide proactive assistance without constant voice commands.
Multi-Platform Expansion
Building on its early access launch nine months ago, Amazon has expanded Alexa+ to the web through Alexa.com, announced at CES 2026. The web platform combines deep information access with real-world actions, from managing calendars to controlling smart homes and making reservations. The redesigned Alexa mobile app now features an agent-forward chatbot interface, giving users access to Alexa across voice, mobile, and web browsers.
According to Amazon, Alexa+ has already scaled to tens of millions of customers since launch, with users engaging twice as much in conversations, making three times more purchases, and requesting recipes five times more frequently.
Industry Partnerships
Amazon has partnered with major brands including Expedia, Yelp, Angi, and Square to build integrated “agentic experiences,” allowing users to discover and book services in travel, dining, home improvement, and wellness directly through Alexa+. Additional integrations include BMW vehicles, Samsung smart televisions, Bosch coffee makers, and Oura health rings.
Real-World Performance Concerns
While Alexa+ offers impressive capabilities, early testing has revealed mixed results. Reviewers noted that while the assistant handles complex tasks effectively in some cases, the overall experience can be inconsistent, with some interactions feeling “incompetent enough to be annoying,” according to hands-on previews from tech journalists.
With Alexa+ now available nationwide across multiple platforms, Amazon is positioning its AI assistant as a core component of its broader smart home and AI strategy, competing directly with other conversational AI systems in an increasingly crowded market.
