Amazon Ends Development on New World: Aeternum
Amazon Games has announced the end of active development for its fantasy MMO New World: Aeternum, marking a significant shift for the gaming division. The decision comes as part of Amazon’s broader cost-cutting measures, which include layoffs affecting tens of thousands of employees across the company.
As of October 28, 2025, the game has officially entered maintenance mode. Season 10 will serve as the final content update, with all future development plans now cancelled. While the servers will remain operational, players can expect no new features or expansions going forward.
Amazon Gaming Division Impacted
The gaming division has been particularly hard hit by the company’s restructuring efforts. The fate of Amazon’s planned Lord of the Rings MMO remains unclear in the wake of these announcements, raising questions about the future of other first-party studio projects.
Despite the shutdown, New World: Aeternum reportedly maintained an active player base at the time of the announcement, making the decision to end development unexpected for many in the gaming community. The development team has since shared heartfelt messages thanking players for their support throughout the game’s lifespan.
