Claude AI Experiences Major Outage: What Happened and How Long It Lasted

Anthropic’s Claude AI experienced significant service disruptions affecting thousands of users across multiple platforms, including the flagship claude.ai interface and Claude Code authentication systems. The outages highlighted the critical role this popular AI assistant plays in users’ daily workflows.

Multiple Outages Strike Claude in Early February

Anthropic’s status page reported elevated errors on Claude Opus 4.5 beginning February 1, 2026, marking the latest in a series of incidents affecting the service. The disruption impacted multiple components including the main claude.ai interface, the API platform, and Claude Code’s authentication systems.

According to Downdetector reports, users flooded the outage tracking site with over 2,400 complaints as the service began failing. The spike in reports indicated that the issue was widespread, affecting both free and paid account holders across desktop and mobile platforms.

What Users Experienced

During the outage, users encountered error messages stating “This isn’t working right now” when attempting to start new conversations or send prompts to Claude. Others reported complete inability to sign in to their accounts, particularly those using Claude Code.

The authentication issues were particularly concerning for developers relying on Claude Code for their workflows. Anthropic’s status updates indicated that users were experiencing errors when attempting to sign in or authenticate Claude Code sessions.

Anthropic’s Response and Recovery

Anthropic acknowledged the elevated error rates around 11:06 AM ET on the day of the incident and confirmed resolution by 11:49 AM ET. The company issued a separate update addressing Claude Code authentication issues, stating that “a fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.”

The total duration of the major disruption lasted approximately one hour and 20 minutes from initial Downdetector spike reports through official resolution. By the time Anthropic confirmed resolution, reports on Downdetector had dropped significantly to under 300.

Current Status

As of the latest reports, Claude services have returned to normal operation. Anthropic continues monitoring system health following the implementation of fixes, particularly for the Claude Code authentication component which required an update to version 2.1.29.

The incident underscores the importance of reliable AI infrastructure as tools like Claude become increasingly central to professional workflows. Users who experienced downtime were encouraged to update their Claude applications to the latest version to ensure they have the most recent stability patches.
