Nintendo Unveils First Look at Live-Action Legend of Zelda Film
Nintendo has officially released the first promotional images from its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, confirming that filming has commenced on the ambitious project. The three images mark the debut of the film’s cast and visual direction as production moves forward.
Cast and Creative Vision
The images showcase Bo Bragason in the role of Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Director Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is helming the production. Ball has expressed his goal to create something that is “serious and cool, but fun and whimsical,” drawing inspiration from Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki.
Visual Style and Setting
The promotional images depict stylized versions of the characters as they appear in Breath of the Wild, with scenes featuring the bright, sun-lit Hyrule Field and its sweeping grasslands. This visual approach suggests the filmmakers are honoring the game’s aesthetic while translating it to live-action.
Release Timeline and Broader Strategy
The Legend of Zelda movie is scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027. The project is reportedly part of a planned trilogy, with all major acting roles signed for three films planned over six years. This announcement aligns with Nintendo’s broader strategy to expand its film slate following the billion-dollar success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with upcoming releases including Super Mario Galaxy in 2026.
