LEGO Unveils Technology-Packed Smart Brick at CES 2026

LEGO’s Revolutionary Smart Brick Brings Physical Play into the Interactive Age

LEGO has introduced LEGO SMART Play, a groundbreaking platform unveiled at CES 2026 that transforms traditional building bricks into intelligent, responsive components without requiring screens or apps. At the heart of this innovation lies the LEGO SMART Brick, marking one of the most significant evolutions to the LEGO System-in-Play since the introduction of minifigures in 1978.

What Makes the Smart Brick Revolutionary

The LEGO SMART Brick is a standard 2x4 brick that conceals a custom-made chip smaller than a typical LEGO stud. According to LEGO, the platform features more than twenty patented world-firsts, packing sophisticated technology into an unobtrusive form factor.

Inside each Smart Brick resides a sophisticated array of components: an accelerometer, gyroscope, light sensor, sound sensor, miniature speaker with onboard synthesizer, and LED lighting system. Rather than playing pre-recorded audio clips, the speaker generates sounds dynamically linked to gameplay in real time, creating a responsive audio experience that adapts to how children actually use the set.

How Smart Bricks Interact

The ecosystem operates through BrickNet, LEGO’s proprietary wireless communication system based on Bluetooth that uses “Neighbor Position Measurement” technology. This allows Smart Bricks to understand their proximity and orientation to each other.

The platform includes complementary components: LEGO SMART Tags (2x2 tiles with digital identities readable through magnetic near-field communication) and LEGO SMART Minifigures, both of which communicate with Smart Bricks to trigger contextual sound effects and light sequences. All elements are compatible with existing LEGO System-in-Play sets, ensuring seamless integration with traditional builds.

Design Philosophy: Technology as Enabler

LEGO designers emphasized a philosophy of “Technology-enabled, not technology-led”—the Smart Brick amplifies imagination rather than directing play. There are no levels to complete or screens to monitor; instead, the technology makes physical toys “come alive” in children’s hands.

Launch Timeline and Initial Sets

Pre-orders began January 9, 2026, with retail availability starting March 1, 2026. The launch lineup features three Star Wars sets:

  • TIE Fighter (Set 75421, ages 8+): 473 pieces with 1x LEGO SMART Brick
  • X-Wing (Set 75423, ages 6+): 584 pieces with 1x LEGO SMART Brick
  • Throne Room (Set 75427, ages 9+): 962 pieces with 2x LEGO SMART Bricks

Initial pricing begins at €69.99 for the Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter set.

Broader Implications

This announcement represents one of the most discussed innovations at CES 2026, signaling LEGO’s strategic pivot toward enhancing traditional play through invisible, contextual technology rather than digital screens—a notable contrast to industry trends favoring app-based experiences.
