OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health: A New AI-Powered Health Assistant
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities with a dedicated Health portal that lets users connect their medical records and wellness apps to the chatbot for more personalized health guidance. The new feature represents a significant step in integrating AI into everyday health management, though it comes with important caveats about its limitations.
What Is ChatGPT Health?
ChatGPT Health is a new sandboxed environment within ChatGPT designed specifically for health-related conversations. Unlike general ChatGPT interactions, this dedicated space features separate chat history and memory, keeping health discussions isolated from other conversations. The tool was developed in close collaboration with physicians and is designed to help users understand medical information without replacing professional healthcare.
Connecting Your Health Data
The new feature allows users to securely connect multiple health apps and medical records to ChatGPT. Supported integrations include:
- Apple Health for fitness and activity data
- MyFitnessPal for nutrition tracking
- Weight Watchers
- Peloton
- Function for lab test insights
- Direct medical records through b.well, which provides the health data connectivity infrastructure
Once connected, ChatGPT can provide more relevant responses grounded in a user’s personal health information.
Privacy and Data Protection
OpenAI has emphasized data separation as a core design principle. Information shared with ChatGPT Health won’t be used to train OpenAI’s AI models, and conversations remain isolated within the dedicated space. The company has also built in additional privacy safeguards and noted that physicians can utilize “customer-managed encryption keys” to maintain compliance with HIPAA standards for institutional use.
Important Limitations
OpenAI is clear that ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment. The tool is designed as a health assistant to help users understand test results, prepare for doctor appointments, and get advice on diet and exercise routines—not to replace professional medical care. Experts have cautioned that while AI chatbots can provide helpful information, they are capable of producing dangerously incorrect statements.
Current Availability
ChatGPT Health is currently in testing stages and available through a waitlist. The feature will gradually roll out across all ChatGPT subscription tiers—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro—on web and iOS, with Android support coming soon. Regional restrictions apply to which health apps can be connected in different areas.
The Broader Healthcare Push
This launch reflects OpenAI’s expanded focus on healthcare. The company noted that hundreds of millions of people ask health and wellness questions weekly on ChatGPT. The feature joins other healthcare initiatives, including Health Bench, a benchmark designed to assess AI model performance in health scenarios.
Several major institutions have already begun implementing ChatGPT for Healthcare, including Boston Children’s Hospital and Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, signaling growing confidence in AI tools for medical support—when properly implemented and supervised.
