WeatherTech Founder Tapped for Federal Trade Commission Role
David MacNeil, the founder and CEO of automotive accessories company WeatherTech, has been nominated by President Donald Trump for a seat on the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson announced the nomination on social media platform X on Tuesday, describing MacNeil as “an outstanding businessman and great patriot.”
MacNeil’s nomination comes after the Trump administration decided to redirect former Texas attorney Ryan Baasch to a position on the National Economic Council instead of the FTC commissioner slot.
The FTC’s Current Structure
The Federal Trade Commission is structured to maintain balance across its five-commissioner board, with no more than three commissioners coming from the same political party. Following the dismissal of the agency’s two Democratic commissioners in March, the FTC has faced scrutiny with an ongoing U.S. Supreme Court case that could expand presidential control over the independent agency.
MacNeil’s nomination represents a significant move in shaping the regulatory landscape, as the FTC plays a crucial role in overseeing consumer protection and antitrust matters across American commerce.
