TV Time, the social TV-tracking app that once boasted 20 million users worldwide, is shutting down. But the app’s original creator is already building its spiritual successor — a modern alternative called Bingers — even as its parent company pivots toward artificial intelligence.

The TV-logging app announced it would officially shut down on July 15, 2026, explaining that it “was no longer sustainable to continue operating the service as a free app.” For the millions who used TV Time to track what they were watching, discover new shows, and engage with a community of fellow fans, the news was a bittersweet end to a 15-year journey.

The Rise and Fall of TV Time

TV Time began in 2011 as a “funny side project” by founder Anthony Pinto, originally called TVShow Time. What started as a hobby grew into a dedicated community of television enthusiasts who loved logging their viewing habits, rating episodes, and discovering new series based on what friends were watching.

The app rebranded to TV Time and was acquired by Whip Media in 2016. By 2021, it had reached 20 million registered users across the globe. But the platform’s trajectory shifted when it was sold again to Blue Torch Capital, an investment firm that had different plans for the property — plans centered on artificial intelligence rather than TV tracking.

What Bingers Brings

Anthony Pinto isn’t walking away from the TV-tracking concept. He’s building Bingers, described as a modern-day alternative with all of TV Time’s “most beloved features, refreshed with modern UI patterns” and performance improvements over its predecessor.

Bingers will let users track TV shows and movies, set reminders for new releases, and engage in fan discussions — the core functionality that made TV Time popular in the first place. Pinto says the new app is being built “in a way that keeps server costs very, very low” and that it “can stay around forever this time.”

The app is expected to hit the App Store and Google Play Store by the end of July. A waitlist is already open, and the Bingers website even offers a way for former TV Time users to import their viewing history.

A Competitive Landscape

Once Bingers launches, it will enter a market with established competitors like Serializd and Letterboxd — the latter of which was reportedly looking to sell a majority stake earlier this year. The TV-tracking space has grown significantly since TV Time first launched, but Pinto’s familiarity with the audience and his guarantee of long-term sustainability could give Bingers an edge with former TV Time refugees.

Meanwhile, TV Time’s current parent company is charting a different course. Blue Torch Capital’s AI-heavy pivot underscores a broader industry trend: the race to integrate artificial intelligence has left some consumer apps behind. For fans of TV Time, the hope is that Bingers will preserve what was great about the original while avoiding the fate that ultimately shut it down.
