The California Science Center has announced that Space Shuttle Endeavour, NASA’s final space shuttle to be built, will officially go on permanent public display at the newly constructed Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center beginning November 13, 2026 — and for the first time, visitors will see it fully assembled in its vertical launch configuration.

A New Home for an American Icon

Endeavour has resided at the California Science Center in Los Angeles since 2012, displayed horizontally in a temporary pavilion while plans for a permanent exhibit took shape. Those plans are now complete. The new 200,000 square-foot Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center — a dramatic expansion of the science museum — will house the shuttle alongside more than 100 historic artifacts, including rare aerospace objects drawn from the museum’s growing collection.

The centerpiece of the exhibit will be Endeavour itself, mounted in full launch position — complete with its solid rocket boosters and external tank. This configuration gives visitors a true sense of the scale and power of the Space Shuttle program. In an added immersive touch, museum guests will be able to ride a 140-foot gantry elevator adjacent to the shuttle, simulating the final ascent astronauts experienced before boarding and launching into orbit.

From Challenger’s Legacy to Hubble’s Servicer

Endeavour was born out of tragedy. NASA authorized the construction of Endeavour — the fifth and final operational Space Shuttle orbiter — in 1986 as a replacement for Challenger, which was lost in a devastating accident during launch that same year. Built using structural spares from the shuttle program, Endeavour first flew into space on May 7, 1992.

Over its service life, Endeavour flew 25 missions, spending nearly 300 days in space and completing 4,671 orbits of Earth. Among its most notable achievements:

Servicing the Hubble Space Telescope — Endeavour crews performed multiple missions to repair and upgrade the orbiting observatory, extending its life and scientific capability.

First Hubble servicing mission (STS-61) — a critical repair mission that corrected the telescope’s flawed mirror optics.

International Space Station assembly — Endeavour delivered major modules, truss segments, and supplies to the growing ISS.

Repairing and deploying satellites — including the dramatic rescue and repair of the Intelsat VI communications satellite.

The Road — Literally — to Los Angeles

After Endeavour was officially retired in 2011 following the conclusion of the Space Shuttle program, NASA selected the California Science Center in Los Angeles as its permanent home. The shuttle arrived at Los Angeles International Airport atop a modified Boeing 747 in September 2012.

What followed was one of the most unusual logistics operations in modern history: Endeavour made a slow, painstaking 12-mile journey from LAX through the streets of Los Angeles to Exposition Park. The shuttle crept along surface roads at just a few miles per hour, requiring trees to be removed, utility lines to be raised, and streets to be reinforced. Thousands of Angelenos lined the route to watch the orbiter pass by.

A New Era of Space Education

The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and astronauts. In addition to Endeavour, the center will feature artifacts spanning the history of aviation and spaceflight, creating a comprehensive narrative of humanity’s journey into the cosmos.

The opening on November 13, 2026 marks the culmination of more than a decade of planning, fundraising, and construction. For space enthusiasts and casual visitors alike, it offers a rare chance to stand beside — and ascend alongside — a vehicle that carried astronauts into orbit more than two dozen times.

“Endeavour represents the best of human ingenuity and the spirit of exploration,” the California Science Center said in its announcement. “This exhibit will allow visitors to experience the wonder and scale of spaceflight firsthand.”

Tickets and additional information are expected to be announced on the California Science Center’s website in the coming months.

Why It Matters

The Space Shuttle Endeavour is more than a museum piece — it is a tangible link to one of the most ambitious eras of space exploration. As NASA and commercial partners turn their attention to the Moon, Mars, and beyond with programs like Artemis and Starship, the shuttle program’s legacy of orbital assembly, satellite servicing, and international cooperation remains foundational to everything that follows.

For anyone who has ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what it takes to get there, Endeavour’s new permanent home offers an answer — up close, towering overhead, and poised for launch once more.
