OpenAI’s Fidji Simo is departing her full-time role as the company’s AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) Chief and transitioning to a part-time advisory position, she announced on X today. The move follows a medical leave she began in April due to a chronic neuroimmune condition.

Simo — who joined OpenAI from Instacart where she served as CEO — had only recently taken on the AGI Chief title after previously leading the company’s applications division as CEO of Applications. Her departure marks the latest in a series of C-suite changes at the high-profile AI company.

Fidji Simo is stepping down as OpenAI's AGI chief due to health reasons, becoming a part-time advisor.

Medical Leave and Transition

“Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I’ve lived with for seven years,” Simo wrote on X. The condition is neuroimmune in nature, she had previously disclosed.

Simo’s transition to part-time advisor comes alongside several other executive departures. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap stepped down around the same time to focus on “special projects,” while CMO Kate Rouch also left her role to prioritize her health, with plans to return in a “more narrowly scoped role” when able.

Broader C-Suite Reorganization

Simo’s April announcement kicked off a cascade of leadership changes. While she was on medical leave, OpenAI president Greg Brockman stepped in to lead product development — including the company’s super app ambitions — while CSO Jason Kwon, CFO Sarah Friar, and CRO Denise Dresser handled business operations.

By mid-May, a broader company reorganization saw Brockman officially take charge of product strategy and “scaling” across four key pillars: core product and platform; critical enterprise industries; consumer segments (health, commerce, personal finance); and core infrastructure, ads, data science, and growth.

In an internal memo viewed by The Verge, Brockman wrote that the reorganization would help OpenAI prioritize its AI agent goals by combining products to “invest in a single agentic platform and to merge ChatGPT and Codex into one unified agentic experience for all.”

A Notable Career Arc

Simo joined OpenAI after a successful tenure as CEO of Instacart (2021–2024), where she previously served as COO. Prior to Instacart, she spent over nine years at Facebook (now Meta) in product leadership roles. Born in Sète, France and educated at HEC Paris and UCLA Anderson School of Management, she also sits on the board of Shopify.

Her departure from the AGI chief role — even in an advisory capacity — leaves a significant gap in OpenAI’s ambitious roadmap toward artificial general intelligence. The company continues to push forward with its unified agentic platform vision under Brockman’s product leadership while navigating an ongoing leadership transition period.
