You have probably received that dreaded “Your iCloud storage is almost full” email at some point as an Apple user. It inevitably leads to a choice: upgrade to iCloud+ for more space, or bundle everything together with Apple One. Both options expand your iCloud storage, but the right pick depends on how many of Apple’s other services you actually use.

What iCloud+ Offers

iCloud+ is Apple’s premium cloud storage tier built on top of iCloud, the company’s syncing service that keeps photos, videos, files, notes, and device settings available across all your devices. A subscription expands your storage beyond the free 5GB limit and adds privacy features like iCloud Private Relay, which hides your IP address and encrypts Safari web traffic, and Hide My Email, which generates disposable email addresses to keep your real inbox secure. You also get support for HomeKit Secure Video cameras and the ability to use a custom domain with your iCloud email address.

iCloud+ Pricing Tiers

The cheapest iCloud+ plan costs just $1 a month for 50GB of storage, including all privacy features and HomeKit support for one camera. Jumping to $3 a month gives you 200GB with support for up to five cameras. Power users can choose the $10 monthly plan for 2TB, the $30 plan for 6TB, or the $60 plan for a full 12TB, all with unlimited HomeKit camera support. All iCloud+ plans can be shared with up to five family members.

What Apple One Includes

Apple One bundles iCloud+ with the company’s entire subscription ecosystem. The Individual plan costs $20 a month and includes 50GB of iCloud+ storage alongside Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade. The Family plan at $26 a month bumps iCloud+ storage to 200GB and supports up to five family members. The Premier plan, at $38 a month, delivers 2TB of iCloud+ storage plus Apple TV+, Music, Arcade, Fitness+, and News+.

Which Should You Choose?

A standalone iCloud+ subscription is the obvious choice if all you need is extra cloud storage and the privacy features that come with it. At $1 a month for 50GB, it is hard to beat for basic backup needs.

The value shifts dramatically if you already pay for Apple’s other services. The $20 Apple One Individual plan saves you roughly $12 a month compared to buying iCloud+ 50GB ($1), Apple TV+ ($13), Apple Music ($11), and Apple Arcade ($7) separately — a combined $32. The $38 Premier plan saves even more, cutting about $32 off the $70 it would cost to purchase 2TB of iCloud+, TV+, Music, Arcade, Fitness+, and News+ individually.

What Happens If You Stop Paying?

If your iCloud storage exceeds your plan after a downgrade or cancellation, Apple stops syncing your data across devices but does not delete it immediately. The company reserves the right to remove device backups after 180 days without a backup, according to iCloud’s terms and conditions. To free up space before downgrading, you can copy files from iCloud Drive to a Mac or external drive, download photos and videos from the iCloud website, and delete large mail attachments and voice memos.

Bottom Line

iCloud+ is the right choice if you simply need more cloud storage and enhanced privacy for your Apple ecosystem. Apple One makes sense if you are already paying for two or more of Apple’s subscription services — the bundle savings are substantial. For most users paying for Apple Music or TV+ alongside their storage, Apple One’s Premier tier at $38 a month provides the best overall value with 2TB of storage and full access to Apple’s content and fitness offerings.
