The maneuver, which took place in May 2026, was a critical step in the spacecraft&amp;rsquo;s journey toward the main asteroid belt.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id=&#34;a-gravity-assist-like-no-other&#34;&gt;A Gravity Assist Like No Other
&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Psyche spacecraft began its approach to Mars on &lt;strong&gt;May 2, 2026&lt;/strong&gt;, making its closest approach on &lt;strong&gt;May 15&lt;/strong&gt;. The gravity assist maneuver used the red planet&amp;rsquo;s gravitational pull to give the spacecraft a significant speed boost while adjusting its trajectory toward its ultimate destination — the asteroid Psyche.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This well-executed flyby will save the mission considerable propellant over the course of its long journey, allowing for more science operations once it reaches its target. The spacecraft is expected to arrive at the asteroid Psyche in &lt;strong&gt;2029&lt;/strong&gt;, where it will spend roughly two years studying the metal-rich body.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The timelapse, shared by NASA on July 17, combines imagery from the spacecraft&amp;rsquo;s &lt;strong&gt;multispectral imager&lt;/strong&gt;, offering a breathtaking perspective of Mars as the spacecraft approached, flew past, and then departed the planet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Viewers can see the &lt;strong&gt;crescent Mars&lt;/strong&gt; captured upon arrival, followed by increasingly detailed views of the Martian surface, and finally, the &lt;strong&gt;icy south pole&lt;/strong&gt; receding into the distance as the spacecraft continued on its course.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;ldquo;The imager performed brilliantly, delivering some rarely seen views of the red planet,&amp;rdquo; said &lt;strong&gt;Jim Bell&lt;/strong&gt;, the Psyche imager instrument lead at Arizona State University, in a statement accompanying the release.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id=&#34;more-than-just-pretty-pictures&#34;&gt;More Than Just Pretty Pictures
&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;While the visuals are undeniably stunning, the flyby served a critical scientific purpose. The Psyche team used the encounter to test the spacecraft&amp;rsquo;s &lt;strong&gt;calibration and sensitivity to scattered light&lt;/strong&gt; — an essential check before it arrives at the asteroid Psyche.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In a particularly impressive demonstration, the imager was able to pick out &lt;strong&gt;Phobos and Deimos&lt;/strong&gt;, the two small Martian moons, from very far away. This served as a practice run for the satellite search the team plans to conduct at the asteroid, where they will look for any potential moonlets orbiting Psyche.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id=&#34;the-road-ahead&#34;&gt;The Road Ahead
&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Launched in &lt;strong&gt;October 2023&lt;/strong&gt; atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, the Psyche mission is NASA&amp;rsquo;s first to study a metal-rich asteroid up close. The asteroid Psyche, located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is thought to be the exposed nickel-iron core of a protoplanet that never fully formed — offering scientists a unique window into the building blocks of our solar system.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With the Mars gravity assist now successfully completed, the spacecraft is on course for its 2029 rendezvous. The timelapse serves as both a remarkable scientific achievement and a reminder of the incredible views our robotic explorers continue to capture as they venture deeper into the solar system.&lt;/p&gt;
