Waze Gets a Gemini-Powered AI Makeover

Google is bringing its flagship AI assistant, Gemini, to the Waze driving app in a meaningful way, introducing conversational voice commands for reporting traffic incidents and finding destinations, alongside a host of quality-of-life improvements including a “less chatty” voice mode and a new Motorcycle Mode.

The updates, announced on July 13, mark one of Google’s most significant feature drops for Waze since acquiring the crowdsourced navigation platform back in 2013. While Google Maps has been steadily receiving AI-powered capabilities over the past year, Waze has largely remained untouched — until now.

Gemini-Powered Conversational Reporting

Of the four new features rolling out, two are explicitly powered by Gemini. The first is an upgrade to Waze’s conversational reporting feature, first introduced in 2024. Drivers can now use natural voice commands to report traffic incidents, road closures, and even suggest map updates like outdated house numbers — all without taking their hands off the wheel.

The second Gemini-powered addition is Destination Search, which lets drivers use conversational voice queries to find places. Instead of typing an address, users can say things like “Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now” or “Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices.” The AI interprets the intent and surfaces relevant results instantly.

Less Chatty Voice Directions

Responding to years of user feedback, Waze is introducing a “less chatty” mode for voice prompts. Drivers who prefer to listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks while navigating can now tone down Waze’s verbal interruptions without sacrificing turn-by-turn guidance. It’s a small but welcome change for anyone who’s ever been mid-podcast when Waze chimes in with “you’re still on the fastest route.”

Motorcycle Mode Arrives

Two-wheeled riders are getting their own dedicated mode. Motorcycle Mode incorporates shortcuts and routing optimized for motorcycles, including access to lanes and roads that cars can’t use. It also provides more accurate estimated times of arrival (ETAs) tailored to two-wheeled travel, helping riders plan their journeys with greater precision.

Smarter Route Suggestions

Lastly, Waze is enhancing its routing engine with personalized suggestions based on a user’s past trips. If you consistently prefer highways over local roads, Waze will learn that behavior and surface those routing options first. The feature draws on Waze’s vast trove of local traffic pattern data to deliver increasingly relevant recommendations the more you drive.

A Measured AI Rollout

Google appears to be taking a measured approach with Waze’s AI integration, rolling out Gemini features gradually rather than overhauling the entire app at once. This contrasts with Google Maps, which has been getting more and more AI capabilities as Google tightens its grip on its primary navigation tool.

For now, Waze remains its own distinct experience — just one that’s getting a lot smarter thanks to Gemini. The features are rolling out to users in the coming weeks across both iOS and Android.
