DuckDuckGo Takes Aim at YouTube Ads With New Built-in Video Ad Blocker
DuckDuckGo has rolled out a powerful new feature in its privacy-focused browser that blocks most video ads — including those pesky pre-roll and mid-roll interruptions on YouTube. The move, announced on July 8, 2026, marks the latest escalation in the ongoing battle between privacy-centric browsers and advertising-supported platforms.
The feature, dubbed “YouTube Ad Blocking,” is powered by the same open-source community filter lists that drive uBlock Origin, one of the most popular ad-blocking extensions on the market. DuckDuckGo says it may also apply its own custom rules to improve compatibility and reduce breakage across different video platforms.
Enabled by Default on Most Platforms
The ad blocker is switched on by default for DuckDuckGo browser users on iPhone, Windows, and Mac. Android users will see it auto-enabled soon, but can already activate it manually from the browser’s settings menu. On all platforms, users can toggle the feature on or off at any time via Settings > Ad Blocking.
While watching a video, desktop users can click the video icon next to the green shield in their address bar to quickly disable ad blocking. On mobile, the option lives under the ☰ menu. When ad blocking is turned off mid-video, the browser may prompt users to submit an anonymous error report — helpful feedback DuckDuckGo says it uses to improve the feature.
How It Works and What to Expect
To detect and block YouTube ads, DuckDuckGo leverages community-maintained filter lists from uBlock Origin, which are regularly updated to keep pace with how ads are served. The company notes that, as with most ad blockers, users may experience slightly longer buffering times before videos start playing — but once the video loads, playback should be ad-free.
“Tired of ads interrupting your videos? Us, too. The DuckDuckGo browser now blocks most video ads, including on YouTube!” — Peter Dolanjski, DuckDuckGo
One important caveat: the feature only works when watching YouTube within the DuckDuckGo browser itself. On mobile devices, links to YouTube videos often open in the dedicated YouTube app by default, where DuckDuckGo’s ad blocking cannot function. Users should open the YouTube website in DuckDuckGo’s browser to take advantage of the blocker.
Duck Player vs. YouTube Ad Blocking
DuckDuckGo already offered Duck Player, a built-in video player that lets users watch YouTube in distraction-free theater mode while blocking tracking cookies and personalized ads. However, Duck Player prevents YouTube from remembering viewing history and saving place in playlists.
The new YouTube Ad Blocking feature is different — it blocks ads on the regular YouTube website while preserving the standard YouTube experience, including features like viewing history and playlist progress. The two features are complementary and can be enabled simultaneously for maximum privacy.
An Unsubtle Shot at Chrome
The timing of the announcement is notable, coming as Google Chrome faces increasing scrutiny over its approach to ad blocking. With Chrome’s migration to Manifest V3 — which significantly limits the capabilities of extensions like uBlock Origin — privacy-focused browsers like DuckDuckGo are positioning themselves as viable alternatives for users who want control over their browsing experience without relying on third-party extensions.
YouTube Ad Blocking is available now in the DuckDuckGo browser on iOS, Windows, Mac, and Android. Users can send anonymous feedback from the browser’s ☰ menu to help DuckDuckGo refine the feature.
