The personal digital assistant (PDA) may have faded into obsolescence after smartphones took over, but Talisman Design is determined to breathe new life into the form factor — with a heavy dose of fantasy flair. The company has just unveiled the PocketMage, an E Ink PDA that leans hard into wizard-themed aesthetics, and it’s already generating significant buzz.
A Clamshell Revival With E Ink Charm
The PocketMage brings back the classic clamshell design that defined handheld computing in the late ’90s and early 2000s, complete with a tactile QWERTY keyboard for satisfying, physical typing. Where it breaks from tradition is its display setup: a 3.1-inch 320 x 240 E Ink panel handles reading and writing tasks, while a slimmer OLED strip perched above the keyboard provides fast-refresh menu navigation. This dual-screen approach cleverly marries the eye-friendly, low-power qualities of E Ink with the responsiveness expected of modern device interaction.
It’s worth noting that the PocketMage is genuinely pocketable — a distinction its rivals can’t always claim. Competitors like the Freewrite Traveler and GPD MicroPC 2 are considerably bulkier, and even the PicoCalc offers mixed results when it comes to fitting in a trouser pocket.
All Aboard the Wizard Theme
The PocketMage isn’t just a piece of hardware; it’s a full commitment to a fantasy gaming persona. The proprietary operating system is built entirely around wizard lore. Want to rename a file? You cast a spell called Renamio. The device ships with a digital tarot deck for divination and a dungeon-crawling RPG titled Mage’s Descent. There’s even an app storefront called the Bazaar where users can browse and install third-party applications.
It’s a cheeky, playful approach that evokes the whimsical design philosophy of Teenage Engineering, and it sets the PocketMage apart in a gadget landscape dominated by minimalist industrial design.
Specs, Price, and Availability
Under the hood, the PocketMage includes a microSD slot for expandable storage, a USB-C port for charging, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. The battery is rated to last roughly a week on a single charge, thanks to the power efficiency of E Ink technology.
The device is currently being funded through a crowdfunding campaign, which has already blown well past its initial goal. The PocketMage is priced at $185 as a DIY kit (requiring assembly by the buyer) and $235 for a pre-built unit. It comes in two colorways: “Parchment” (white) and “Royal Purple.” According to Talisman Design, shipments are expected to begin in March 2027.
For enthusiasts of niche hardware, retro computing, or anything with a sense of humor, the PocketMage looks like a delightful anomaly worth keeping an eye on.
