Sony Hints Next-Gen PlayStation Will Go 'Beyond the Living Room' With Handheld Ambitions

Sony has dropped its strongest hint yet that the next-generation PlayStation console will break free from the traditional living room setup, suggesting a future where PlayStation gaming extends to handheld and portable experiences.

In a recent Q&A with investors, Sony addressed questions about the company’s next-generation platform strategy, and the response pointed toward a significant shift in how the company thinks about PlayStation hardware.

What Sony Said

When asked about bringing users back from PC gaming and the future of the PlayStation platform, Sony responded:

“For the next-generation platform, rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs, we aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation. This includes not only technological advancements but also an expansion of usage styles, enabling a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room.”

The phrase “beyond the living room” is a notable departure from Sony’s traditional marketing, which has long centered PlayStation as the heart of home entertainment. The company acknowledged that “more users globally have been using personal monitors” and that it’s already selling peripherals like monitors and speakers to broaden usage scenarios.

A Handheld Future?

While Sony already offers remote play capabilities through Remote Play and the PlayStation Portal streaming handheld, the investor response suggests something more ambitious is in the works.

Bloomberg reported in 2024 that Sony is developing a new handheld gaming console capable of playing PlayStation 5 games natively. Adding further fuel to the fire, Sony has quietly introduced a Power Saver mode to some PS5 games, a feature that would make titles more suitable for battery-powered handheld play.

The combination of these developments strongly suggests that Sony’s next-generation PlayStation strategy includes a meaningful handheld component, potentially rivaling the Nintendo Switch and the burgeoning handheld PC market.

Pricing Concerns

Sony also addressed hardware pricing for its next-generation platform, and the news may give budget-conscious gamers pause. The company stated plainly that “we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.”

Given that the PS5 Pro already retails for $899.99, and competitors like the Xbox Series X are seeing price increases, the next-generation PlayStation could carry a premium price tag.

When Can We Expect It?

The PS5 launched in November 2020, and Sony has historically released a new console generation every six to seven years. Following that pattern would suggest a launch sometime in 2026 or 2027. However, reports indicate Sony has considered delaying its next console to 2028 or 2029 due to component costs and market conditions — a period the industry has dubbed “RAMaggedon.”

The Bigger Picture

Sony’s shift toward a “beyond the living room” philosophy represents a recognition that gaming habits have fundamentally changed. The rise of PC gaming, cloud streaming, and portable devices like the Steam Deck has eroded the traditional console advantage of being the best way to play in your living room.

If Sony delivers a next-generation platform that seamlessly bridges home console power with true handheld portability, it could redefine the PlayStation brand for a new era. For now, all signs point to a future where PlayStation follows you wherever you go.
