Moonshot describes Kimi K3 as the world’s largest open-source AI system, with a staggering 2.8 trillion parameters. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic disclose exact parameter counts for their leading systems, making direct comparisons difficult. Independent verification of both Chinese models’ capabilities will have to wait until they are fully released and subjected to third-party testing.
Open Source as a Competitive Strategy
Both companies are emphasizing a key strategic difference from the leading US labs: rather than locking their most advanced models behind closed APIs, they are making them publicly available for anyone to use, study, and customize.
