Microsoft has announced a series of updates to the Windows Search Box in Windows 11, streamlining the interface and removing sponsored web results as part of a broader push to improve the operating system’s core user experience. The changes, detailed in a blog post on July 13, are rolling out to Windows Insider testers starting today.

A Cleaner and More Usable Search Interface
The updated Windows Search Box features a redesigned home screen that has been pared back for less visual clutter, making it easier to access recent searches and frequently used commands. Microsoft has also improved the results display with larger spacing that makes room for useful metadata, helping users identify the right file, app, or setting at a glance.
One of the most significant changes is the ability to toggle web and Microsoft Store results on or off, giving users greater control over what appears when they search. Previously, searches would automatically blend local file results with web suggestions and store listings, often resulting in a noisy and distracting experience. Now, users who prefer a local-only search can easily configure that preference.
Removing Sponsored Content From Web Results
In a move that will likely be welcomed by many Windows users, Microsoft is removing sponsored content such as promoted products and advertisements from the top of web search results within the Search Box. This change eliminates a common frustration where searching for an app or file would surface promoted store listings before showing relevant local results.
The improved search engine also does a better job of finding both files and applications, addressing a long-standing complaint about Windows search accuracy. By refining the underlying indexing and matching algorithms, Microsoft aims to make the Search Box a genuinely useful entry point for navigating the operating system rather than a gateway to Bing ads.
Microsoft Shifts Focus Back to Windows Fundamentals
The Search Box improvements are the latest sign that Microsoft is rebalancing its priorities after a prolonged push to integrate its Copilot AI assistant into every corner of Windows 11. Following mixed reception to the AI-first approach, the company has been steadily returning focus to foundational quality of life improvements.
Recent updates have included the ability to resize the Start menu, a new system for rolling back faulty drivers, and now a thoroughly reworked search experience. These changes suggest that Microsoft recognizes that even as AI features evolve, the core mechanics of the operating system remain the foundation of user satisfaction. With the streamlined Search Box rolling out to Insiders now, general availability is expected in a future Windows 11 feature update.
