Anthropic's Claude Can Now Import Your Memories From ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot

Anthropic has made switching to its Claude AI assistant significantly easier with a new memory import tool that can extract your context and conversation history from competing AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

The memory import tool generates a special prompt that, when pasted into a competitor’s chatbot, extracts everything that AI knows about you into a portable text format. Users can then copy that output directly into Claude’s memory system, effectively transferring years of personalization and context in minutes.

How the Import Process Works

To use the feature, Claude users visit the dedicated import page and follow the instructions for their previous chatbot of choice. The tool produces a prompt tailored to each platform — ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot — that asks the bot to summarize its stored memories and context about the user. After pasting the generated output into Claude’s “Manage memory” section, Anthropic says it takes roughly 24 hours for Claude to fully assimilate the information.

Users can review exactly what Claude has learned by clicking “See what Claude learned about you” and can manually tweak or delete specific memories in the settings. Anthropic notes that Claude is designed to prioritize work-related context, meaning it may skip over more personal, non-professional details.

Perfect Timing Amid a ChatGPT Exodus

The feature’s launch comes at a pivotal moment for Anthropic. Claude recently surged to the number one spot in the Apple App Store’s free apps chart, dethroning ChatGPT for the first time. The shift follows Anthropic’s high-profile refusal to bend to Pentagon demands regarding AI guardrails on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems.

In contrast, OpenAI stepped in to fill Anthropic’s vacated role, striking a deal with the Department of Defense. That decision has sparked a growing boycott movement among users canceling ChatGPT subscriptions, many of whom are migrating to Claude as an ethical alternative.

A Strategic Play for User Migration

The memory import tool is a clear strategic move by Anthropic to lower the switching costs that typically lock users into a single AI ecosystem. Historically, the effort required to rebuild a chatbot’s understanding of your preferences, projects, and communication style has been a major barrier to switching providers. By making that data portable, Anthropic removes one of the biggest friction points in the increasingly competitive AI assistant market.

With competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft all racing to deepen their own memory and personalization features, Anthropic’s ability to absorb context from any of them could prove to be a significant differentiator. As the AI chatbot wars intensify, making it easy for users to walk away from their existing provider might be the most compelling feature of all.
